80-Mazama-Newhalem: Smoke gets in my eyes

59.5 miles/ +4598.1 ft/ Total miles 3354.0/ flat tire- 1

Smoke from wildfires was in the air all day today.

Early morning view, just after leaving Mazama:

Yesterday there was smoke at Mazama but it was totally clear at Rainy Pass. I was hoping for the same pattern today but no such luck. There was smoke all the way over both passes and all the way down to Newhalem.

The ride up to Washington Pass was ok – cool temperatures and the grades don’t seem as long or as steep, after riding Sherman and Loup Loup. I guess that makes a good training program for this ride. Over the top around 9:30 AM.

Thanks, Bob, for sag support today. It also helped to ride without all the gear on the bike.

It turns out there is AT&T cell service in Newhalem and even in the campground. Big improvement from the past.

  1. Congrats on getting over the last hurdle. I’m sorry to hear that the hazy smoke lingers even over Washington Pass and west. I’m in Tonasket tonight and had hazy smoke all day; I was hoping that the smoke would stay to the east and not get blown father west. Oh well, we can’t do anything about it. Good luck with the final decent into Puget Sound and your arrival back home. — Dave

  2. Congratulations on a well ridden ride. I’m impressed at how quickly you managed to cross the U.S. Hopefully there Will there be a welcoming home get together to help you celebrate your adventure, maybe at one of the local brew-pubs?

  3. It seems like you wil be dipping into the Pacific in two days at your amazing, steady rate. Congratulations on your incredible journey!

    1. I’ve reconsidered the need for wheel dipping in the Pacific (technically inland waters -Puget Sound). I think I will go for a summit finish (Capitol Hill) at E Roy St and Federal Ave. My own front door.
