36-Boulder Junction day off

0 miles

After several long and hard days, I had decided to take a day off in Boulder Junction and the weather confirmed that this was a great idea. There were several thunderstorms with heavy rain late in the day Saturday, and a cold front came through with more rain on Sunday. It seems to be clearing up now (late Sunday) but the weather forecast still has a chance of rain tomorrow. I hope it goes somewhere else. It should be much cooler (60s) and drier, a welcome relief from the hot humid weather the past few days.

I enjoyed a stay at High Lake near Boulder Junction, courtesy of friends of friends who have a wonderful cabin on the lake. Thanks again to everyone who has helped me on this trip!

In the comments a few days ago, there was a question about what gear got sent back and what is staying. I sent back one off-bike T-shirt and kept one. I sent back a wool (Ibex) bike jersey that I don’t need, and I am keeping 2 long-sleeve high-via jerseys  (light weight fabric) since I have been wearing long sleeves almost every day to keep the sun off. I also kept a short-sleeve high-via jersey. I sent back a wool hat and wool buff, since I don’t need them here. If I need some clothes for cooler weather when I get to Montana, I will buy what I need then. I bought a Pearl Izumi high-vis jacket in Clare, Michigan (on sale) that has zip-off sleeves, and I was able to toss a high-vis vest and lightweight wind jacket, since the new one serves both purposes. I also swapped out the SPD pedals and cleats for Eggbeaters in Clare. I like the new pedals a lot.

I have added a few tools to keep all the attachments on the Ortlieb panniers tightened. Now I am carrying 4 spare tubes (I started with 3).

I’m also carrying 3 full water bottles now and some food, because many of the restaurants and grocery stores shown on the Adventure Cycling maps are no longer in operation or they are closed on the day or time when I am there. So I am carrying bread, PB and J, tuna in foil packs, and always an assortment of Clif Bars.

Maybe this is a good sign:

  1. Hi, Judy. Calvin passed on your blog address, and I’ve been catching up. A fantastic journey! Happy to hear that you are doing well. Best of luck to you.

  2. Ken and I enjoyed having you stay with us on High Lake. We wish the weather had cooperated so we could have gotten you out on our beautiful lake. Maybe next visit. Hopefully the rainbow is a sign for a better weather this week. Good luck. Be safe.
