03-Hadley-Pittsfield- into the Berkshires

48 miles – +3285 ft –   Total miles 145

Hard ride today – lots of climbing and quite a bit of wind. And also lots of sun and nice views across the Berkshires. It seemed like every time I got to a “summit” I could see the next hill in front of me.

I left Hadley about 8:45 and pulled in to a campground north of Pittsfield about 3:25. Long day. It’s nice to be camping and lucky there is a pub close by. Good day.

  1. Congrats on your third day, first night of camping, and first set of significant hills. I’ve heard other cyclists complain about the Berkshires. But once over them and past Albany, you’ll have clear sailing for a long time ahead. Enjoy the hills, and being able to check off one state as you move into New York. — Dave

  2. Great ride. If you had time for a 20 mile detour – the great Hoosac Tunnel is located about 10 miles north of you in North Adams. It’s an active railroad tunnel built in fits and starts from 1852 that began with the trial of a doomed to failure TBM, followed by invention of nitroglycerin, Burleigh pneumatic rock drills, and a number of other major innovations (“need is the mother of invention”) and final hole through in 1875 of the 4.7 mile long tunnel – could be a shortcut for you through the Berkshies. 🙂
