74-Kettle Falls- Republic

39.8 miles/ +4495.2 ft/ Total miles 3166.8

The astute observer may notice that yesterday’s ride ended in Colville and today’s begins in Kettle Falls, which is about 7-½ miles west of Colville. Hmm … Last night I stayed with a Warmshowers host who lives on top of a mountain between Colville and Kettle Falls — 5 miles of gravel road. She was in Colville for appointments and errands, so I met her in the afternoon in Colville to drive up to her house. I did get a chance to go to the historical museum in Colville, which has lots of local information and artifacts. The ride between Colville and Kettle Falls is not very scenic, and this morning it was easier to be dropped off just west of the bridge over the Columbia River/ Roosevelt Lake and start the climb up Sherman Pass.

The ride up to the top of the pass was about 23 miles and lots of elevation gain. The first 10-11 miles were not too hard; the next five were a little harder, and the last 7 miles were just plain long, hot, and steep. Luckily for me, the logging trucks going my direction were empty. Where the sight distance was limited, I pulled off the road for them and for other trucks. For most of the ride, I needed to pay attention to the white line and the narrow shoulder, which meant that I could not enjoy the scenic ride through the forest and along the rivers and creeks. It took me 5 hours to get to the summit (includes walking about a half-mile near the top).

At the top of Sherman Pass, elevation 5575 ft – high point of the trip:

My companions on the road:

I had a nice ride down the 6 percent grades to get to Republic. I will stay here tomorrow to recover from Sherman Pass. It’s a nice little town, with some interesting attractions: the historical museum and the Stonerose Interpretive Center/ Eocene Fossil Site. So I expect to have a good rest day in Republic!

  1. You surely deserve a rest day – that’s a big climb! I wish the downhill had less truck traffic so you could enjoy it more. Have a good day with the fossils!

  2. Uncle Henry and I are gearing up to escort you into Seattle on the 4th (assuming that’s still the date you expect to complete the last push from Snohomish to Seattle). Plan is to leave Zoka’s around 7:00a, head north and meet you enroute. I’ll email you the route I’d suggest, but if you’ve got one mapped out already, let me know. Great to see your posts from eastern Washington these past few days. Almost home!

    1. Hi Peter – Yes, Friday is the day.! The plan sounds good. I will send you the route I am using (RidewithGPS). Maybe it’s the same as yours. I am using RSVP between Arlington-Seattle, reversed.
