I’m not sure who had the inspiration to name these towns in the “thumb” of Michigan after colleges in the east, but here they are. Vassar looks nice and there’s even a movie theater:
I met a rider also going east-west — headed to San Francisco– in Brown City, and we rode together for the next 40 miles. Fantastic! He just graduated from college and started from Albany a couple of weeks ago. Luckily he’s already got a job, starting in September, and time for this big adventure over the summer.
Big storm predicted for tonight and tomorrow. I hope it’s not too bad. I am planning to ride 35 miles to Bay City.

Great ride. If you get to north end of Wisconsin near Bayfiled there’s a ferry to the Apostle Islands – great national park with lots of wildlife. But is probably at least a day’s diversion. Also in North Minnesota east of International Falls, a little north of Virginia, Minnesota (?) there’s a Neutrino sensing/receiving site – watch out for stray neutrinos. Wishing you good travelling.

Hi Red,
These are good suggestions. I can definitely watch out for stray neutrinos!
My route across Wisconsin is quite a bit south of Bayfield. The closest point to my route would mean 50+ miles each way to Bayfield. If you’re driving a car, that doesn’t sound like much, but on a bike, that’s a day each way, just to get there and back. Unfortunately I am missing out on seeing many interesting places – even some of the ones right on my route – in order to cover miles every day. Luckily the ride itself is interesting and different every day – very different from the experience when traveling by car. Judy
